THE FILMS FROM SWEDEN’S MOST NOTORIOUS VIDEO COMPANY
ZOMBIERNAS ÅTERKOMST SPECIAL EDITION * DIGITALLY RESTORED
During the barbaric heyday of film censorship in the early 1980s, Video Invest was Sweden’s boldest and most notorious video distributor. Their films were far more outrageous than anyone else’s, prompting police raids on video shops across Sweden. The 26 confiscated VHS titles were destroyed, and the company went bankrupt. Now the films are back! In their original uncut versions, digitally restored.
When an heir arrives in a fog-shrouded village to investigate a relative’s mysterious death, he discovers that a mad scientist is bringing the dead back to life through forbidden experiments. He is soon drawn into a nightmare of necrophilia, dark secrets and violent death.
Zombiernas återkomst is an unusual blend of Gothic horror and Spanish Euro-horror aesthetics. The film was made during the final years of the dictatorship, when Franco still wielded considerable power and the censors had orders to take their sharpened scissors to Spanish horror. Not that you would notice from the versions released abroad.
Spanish horror giant Paul Naschy plays the incurable necrophile Igor. Best known for portraying werewolf Waldemar Daninsky in no fewer than twelve films, Naschy has limited screen time here, but his role is iconic and one of the reasons the film has become a cult favourite.
