An elderly couple struggles through increasingly restricted and difficult everyday life in a Paris apartment filled to the brim with books and gadgets - memories of a long and active life. The husband (Francoise Lebrun) is a retired psychologist who, after a career spent piecing together the minds of others with horror, notices how her own is beginning to fragment. The husband (Dario Argento), struggles with his book project about the dreamlike qualities of film storytelling and does not want or cannot really realize how badly his beloved life partner and wife is in trouble. The son Stephane (Alex Lutz), who has lived his entire life in drug abuse and relied on his parents' support, now sees how the roles are reversed and he is forced to shoulder his responsibility as the closest relative.

Known as French films terrible child thanks to provocative and bold works such as Irreversible , Enter the Void and Lux Aeterna , Gaspar Noé may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think of an emotional, meditative film about aging and death. Gaspar Noé created the project after a massive brain hemorrhage nearly killed him. After recovering, he became a teetotaler and began work on Vortex . The film is described as a more mature work and was praised almost unanimously after its screenings in Cannes. But Gaspar Noé has not completely left his desire for experimentation behind. Vortex told in a clever way split screen , a visual representation of the increasing gap between the main characters.

Horror film legend and director Dario Argento ( Suspiria , Trauma ) surprises with a strong and emotional acting performance in the role of the aging husband. Françoise Lebrun also has a long and distinguished career as an actress ( The Mother and the Whore , The Kidnapping of Michelle Houellebecq ). Alex Lutz has in recent years been seen in films such as Spirou and A small bookstore in Paris .
