Beginning in the mid-19th century, over a million Swedes flee our country's poverty and famine to emigrate to America. Among them we meet the Småland couple Karl Oskar and Kristina, who, together with their children and friends, embark on a long and painful journey towards an unknown fate. Many on board the ship never reach their destination, while the survivors are driven on by a dream of a new life where they can farm their land and eat their fill, a dream of finding happiness in the Promised Land.

The film adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg's grand national epic is the most expensive and boldest in Swedish film history and took four years to complete, including the sequel Nybyggarna. An incredible 1.6 million cinemagoers saw the first film in Sweden, which, thanks to five Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress), also enjoyed great success abroad.
