Underworld + Rawhead Rex (Clive Barker)

UNDERWORLD
The well-known prostitute Nicole is kidnapped from the brothel where she works. In sheer desperation, wealthy businessman Hugo Motherskille hires Nicola's former lover Roy Bain to find her. The investigation into the disappearance leads to a certain Dr. Savary, an unscrupulous biologist and chemist who has created a race of mutants and released them into the London Underground system. To control his creations, Dr. Savary has made them addicted to a psychotropic drug he has manufactured to his own prescription.

Underworld , also known as Transmutations , is a crazy British blast from our 80s past. The screenplay is written by Clive Barker himself based on one of the author's own short stories. In one of the roles we see none other than Hammer darling Ingrid Pitt. The music is by the Welsh New Wave band Freur, a group that much later had a smash hit with the song “Born Slippy Nuxx” after it was included on the soundtrack to Trainspotting . At that time, however, the band had renamed themselves Underworld after the film they composed at the beginning of their career.

When some farmers in the Irish countryside are clearing a field, they accidentally knock over a monolith that has stood there since time immemorial. The stone was the only thing that chained the monstrous pagan god Rawhead Rex. Now the bloodthirsty beast is once again free to sow his terror across the land. Woe to all who stand in his way!

Clive Barker himself wrote the screenplay for this monster splasher based on a short story from volume three of Books of Blood . A now classic book series with which Barker paved the way for the splatter punks who revolutionized horror in the latter part of the 80s. Working on the film adaptation inspired Barker to take up directing himself. The following year came Hellraiser out.

Since its original release in cinemas, the cult reputation surrounding Rawhead Rex continued to grow. It has constantly attracted new viewers who have experienced Rawhead Rex on VHS, via cable channels, DVD and BD. Now the film has been digitally restored and audiences once again have the chance to see it on the big screen.
