"UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF HITCHCOCK'S FIVE BEST" Chicago Reader

In 1830s Australia, a large part of the population consists of British convicts who have served their sentences in the colony. One of them is Sam Flusky, who was exiled after being convicted of murder. Now he is a wealthy businessman who lives on his stately estate with the murder victim's beautiful sister, the aristocrat Henrietta, who has sunk into alcoholism caused by an abnormal self-loathing. When the governor's nephew comes to visit, he falls in love with Henrietta and sees it as his mission to restore her to health. But is Henrietta's past the cause of her condition, or is there someone conspiring to drive her insane?

In 1958, the critics at the legendary Cahiers du Cinema in France named this film one of the ten best of all time. Hitchcock chose two of his favorites for the lead roles. Ingrid Bergman, who had the lead roles in both The Bewitched and Notorious, and Joseph Cotten, who was the poster name for Shadow of a Doubt. They also played opposite each other in Gaslight .
