After a wealthy museum director is stabbed to death, his psychologist Dr. Sam Rice is inadvertently drawn into the case. First the police come looking for answers from him, then the murder victim's mistress Brooke comes looking for much more than that. Sam is helplessly drawn into the mysterious woman's beauty and cool charm, but at the same time he begins to suspect that she knows more than she's letting on. The more he becomes entangled in the case and in Brooke's life, the more he begins to fear that he will be the killer's next victim.

With clear inspiration from Hitchcock, this is a delightfully nerve-wracking thriller in the good old style. Robert Benton is responsible for the screenplay and direction, whose previous film, Kramer vs. Kramer, brought Oscars to himself (best director and screenplay), Meryl Streep (best supporting actress) and many others. In the other roles we find Roy Scheider from Jaws and Jessica Tandy from Hitchcock's The Birds.
