The old humble couple Tomi and Shukishi leave their small fishing village to visit their adult children in faraway Tokyo. It has been many years since they last saw each other, so they are looking forward to seeing them again. But they soon realize that they are being welcomed into their house more out of duty than love. Their own children, whom they formed out of love and placed their hopes in, have suddenly become strangers. The only one who truly appreciates the visit is their daughter-in-law, the selfless Noriko. While she takes care of Tomi and Shukishi, the couple comes to the painful realization that their children no longer need them.

Yasujiro Ozu's bittersweet masterpiece was voted the best film of all time by a jury of 358 directors, including Scorsese, Coppola and Tarantino, in Sight & Sound's latest poll (which takes place every ten years). The film thus knocked the "eternal number one" CITIZEN KANE off its throne .
