When Alvin Straight learns that his brother doesn't have long to live, he decides to set off and make peace with him. So even though he doesn't own a car and can't afford a bus ticket, he sets off anyway - on his thirty-year-old lawnmower tractor! Ahead of him is a 520-mile journey from Iowa to Wisconsin - with a top speed of 8 km/h. But the warmth and respect he encounters along the way will surely carry him forward...
