BRUTAL REVENGE WESTERN IN AUSTRALIA'S UNFORGIVING NATURE
The father of an Aboriginal family is drafted into the Australian army during World War II. When he and many other men are gone, corrupt forces in the small community seize the opportunity. Families are broken up and property is confiscated. Women and children become slaves to the white landowners. Rape and other abuses become part of the new, horrific everyday life. However, the perpetrators have not counted on the strength of Jarah, one of the women who decides to take the law into her own hands and exact bloody revenge on her oppressors.
Directed by Victoria Wharfe McIntyre, The Flood an unforgiving and uncompromising film. The story takes its own path outside the well-trodden paths of the revenge genre. It confronts very dark chapters of Australia's 20th century history in a way that reminds us that it was not that long ago. Alexis Lane impresses in the lead role as Jarah. She is backed by a strong ensemble and beautiful photography by Kevin Scott, whose gorgeous views of Australia's vast nature contrast with the dark subject matter.
