1958. In a small town in Skåne, the town's only dance band gathers to rehearse. They call themselves Sven Klang's Quintet, even though there are only four of them. Sven is the oldest, a car salesman by profession and the leader of the orchestra, which he controls with flattery, lies and threats. Now Sven has promised that they will become a real quintet and has engaged saxophonist Lasse, who has played with the greats of jazz back in Stockholm. It soon turns out that Lasse is a musical genius and ready to aim high, which makes the younger members of the band dream of something bigger than Sven's talk of "giving the bastards what the bastards want". A clash between Lasse and Sven is inevitable. One of them has to go!
SVEN KLANGS QUINTETT is based on a play by the musical theatre group Oktober. The film became one of the great surprises of the 1970s with 285,000 cinemagoers and took home the Guldbagge Jury's Special Prize and the Swedish Film Critics Association's award for Film of the Year in 1976, with more than twice as many votes as Mannen på taket.
