A forbidden relationship between the maid Sada and her master comes to a tragic end – a true story that shook the Japanese Empire in 1936. When Japanese new wave director Nagisa Oshima interpreted the gripping story in the controversial Kingdom of the Senses forty years later, the film was completely banned in several countries for its explicit scenes, of an erotic and violent nature. In Sweden too, it caused a heated debate in the media when it finally had its theatrical release, but today it is praised for its stunningly beautiful imagery.
