SCANNERS was David Cronenberg's biggest success during his low-budget period in his native Canada. The make-up effects were handled by Dick Smith (Oscar winner for Amadeus) and Chris Walas (Oscar winner for The Fly). The Brood A psychotic housewife undergoes experimental psychotherapy and begins giving birth to murderous monster babies that attack everyone she hates . Samantha Eggar from The Exterminator plays the crazy housewife in THE BROOD and her even crazier doctor is played by Oliver Reed, known from the Oscar-winning Gladiator. Of all Cronenberg's films, this is the one that suffered the most from the Swedish film censors, who made a total of twelve cuts.
