WHEN SERIES CREATION COLLISIONS WITH SERIAL MURDER
Comic book creator Todd is having trouble coming up with a fitting ending to his horror magazine Slasherman . Inspired by a killer who rampaged along I-90 in the late 1980s, the series has become wildly popular but has also been criticized for cashing in on real-life tragedies. To relieve his writer's block, Todd takes his wife Kathy, who is working on a book about the killer's victims, his assistant Aurora, and his friend Ezra on a book signing and research trip along the haunted stretch of road. A decision they end up regretting when murders clearly inspired by Slasherman soon follow in their wake. Has the original killer returned or has reading comics gone to one of Todd's fans' heads?
Based on a graphic novel by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, Jay Baruchel's film adaptation is an extremely bloody, nasty, yet comical meta-examination of art as a reflection of an often violent reality. Side by side with splatter horror, it asks questions such as whether an artist has a responsibility for how a creation is received and interpreted by the audience. Filmed in a comic-inspired aesthetic by Karim Hussain and with lots of gruesome practical effects, Baruchel's film will not leave anyone indifferent.
