The success of Papphammar took off in 1980 when the man in the gray overcoat who does whatever comes to his mind suddenly stumbled onto SVT, completely unannounced, without being on the schedule. People burst out laughing and wanted to see more, and there was more, but the problem was that there was no way of knowing when he would appear next. Most people missed a lot of episodes. The saving grace was that Gösta & Co. cut all the episodes together into a biopic. It was a success! A full 320,000 cinemagoers in fact! But what many have forgotten is that the character Papphammar was actually not completely new. He appeared on SVT back in 1978 in the series “Herr och fru Papphammar” with Gösta and Lena Söderblom, which had never been shown before except on TV – until now!
