The film has created new tensions between the countries, resulting in its total ban in Ukraine. The epic blockbuster spans six years and follows World War II through the eyes of the young Zosia, who lives in a small village where Poles, Ukrainians and Jews live side by side. At the age of 17, she is married off against her will at the same time as the area is invaded by the Russians, followed by the Nazi occupation. In this hotbed of violence, the Ukrainian nationalists also come to life.
