Justin Kurzel's direction is restrained, sensitive and respectful in its depiction of the run-up to the tragedy. We follow Nitram, who has been at odds with life since childhood. Without success, he tries to make friends and find a connection. It also depicts the price his parents have paid for years of trying to support and set boundaries. Creating a loving relationship with a child who is not particularly interested is a difficult task. One day, however, a chance encounter with a woman who lives alone with her dogs gives Nitram a chance to come out of her shell. For a time, a different future seems possible. Essie Davis, as the mysterious friend Helen, along with Judy Davis and Anthony La Paglia, as the powerless parents, give consistently brilliant performances. Caleb Landry Jones is unforgettable, whose portrayal of Nitram balances between repressed anger and sadness over his exclusion.
