What began with consent turned into rape in a dark Manchester alley. The perpetrator Johnny steals a car and flees to the seedy neighborhoods of East London. While hiding with his ex Louise, Johnny tries to get his life in the capital straight. But his enormous self-image stands in the way, as he considers himself intellectually superior to everyone he meets - a trait that proves problematic in a big city like London. Naked is a study of a man's megalomania resulting from manic depression, and was Mike Leigh's first major festival success. The film won awards for both Best Director and Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hortense Cumberbatch is a successful middle-class optician in London who decides to search for her biological roots after the death of her adoptive mother. Being black, Hortense is naturally astonished when she learns that her biological mother is a white working-class woman on the edge of society. The discovery of her new family changes Hortense, and getting involved in their lives changes hers as well. Secrets & Lies was nominated for no less than five Oscars and is one of Mike Leigh's most successful films. It was awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes, a Golden Globe and three BAFTA awards.
