MAX VON SYDOW IN HIS LAST ACCOMPLISHED ROLE
"VERY IMPRESSIVE WAR DRAMA. VON SYDOW IS BRILLIANT" Film-Forums
“IMPRISONS AND ENGAGES. VON SYDOW MAKES A HEARTBREAKING PORTRAIT” Indie Movie Review
On December 13, 1943, Operation Kalavryta is launched by the German army's 117th Jaeger Battalion. The mission is to encircle the Greek resistance movement in the small town of Kalavryta and wipe it out to the last man. But the freedom fighters offer unexpectedly fierce resistance and manage to capture 78 Nazis, who are executed the same day. Blinded by the desire for revenge, General Karl Le Suire orders his force to wipe out not only the resistance fighters – but every living thing in the entire town.
Max von Sydow plays the last survivor of the tragedy in this powerful war film. The film is one of the most expensive ever made in Greece and was number one at the box office. The Kalavryta massacre was undoubtedly the worst war crime committed by the Nazis during the occupation of Greece. It is the first time the events have been depicted in a feature film.
