A MAJOR PLAYER IN A MAJOR ROLE
BASED ON MAIGRET AND THE YOUNG DEAD BY GEORGES SIMENON
The seasoned inspector Maigret is involved in a new case. A young woman in an evening dress is found murdered in a square in Paris. The investigation reveals a very tragic story that brings back dark memories. The usually steadfast Maigret once again feels the ground shaking under his feet.
Georges Simenon's classic detective hero has been portrayed on film many times before by giants such as Pierre Renoir, Jean Gabin and Rowan Atkinson. But critics agree, no one has managed to bring Maigret to life in such a portrait-like manner and with such a strong emotional presence as Gérard Depardieu. This is the second time director Patrice Leconte has taken on one of Simenon's novels. The previous, Monsieu Hire , was nominated for a César for Best Direction and Film in 1990.
IN Maigret The glamorous nightlife of 1950s Paris is evoked. Beautiful clothes, people and environments are reproduced with dazzlingly gorgeous photography by Yves Angelo. But as you know, even that coin had a flip side. We also get to follow Maigret to the poorly lit backyards and worn-out attic apartments during his investigations. Leconte gives us a classic detective story told with a high level of style and great empathy.
Simenon dropped out of school at the age of fifteen and wasted no time after that. During a long writing career, he wrote hundreds of books. Seventy-five novels and twenty-eight short stories feature Inspector Maigret in the lead role. Most of them have been translated into Swedish.
