The teacher, Cariño, lives in Costa Rica and teaches the lessons from one room. He hops around with his laptop between different locations in a fancy shack on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Teacher and student get along well and their weekly conversations are a welcome part of everyday life. When a tragedy strikes that turns Adam's life upside down, Cariño becomes his lifeline overnight. The long-distance friendship deepens and becomes more complicated as the contacts become closer and the conversations become increasingly intimate. Mark Duplass (Adam) and his brother Jay pioneered the mumblecore subgenre after their acclaimed debut with The Puffy Chair in 2005 and have since acted in, written and produced several acclaimed films. Natalie Morales (Cariño) will make her dual directorial debut in 2021 with Language Lessons and Plan B .
