Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary, known to the masses as “Sisi”, is adored for her beauty and inspiring fashion, but unlike her husband, she has no power. In 1877, “Sisi” turns 40 and is officially considered an old woman. To maintain her public image, she goes on a strict diet and tightens her corset tighter and tighter. Trapped in her own golden cage, she develops increasingly wayward traits and indulges in things she should not.

Indie queen Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Bergman Island) took the initiative for this film herself and has been awarded several awards for her sharp portrait. Including the European Film Awards and the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize in Cannes for Best Actress. The film was Austria's contribution to the 2023 Oscar nominations.
