Sight & Sound's prestigious poll of the best films in history, which has been held every ten years since 1952, has a sensational new gold medalist. After only three films – De Sica's BICYCLE THIEF , Welles ' CITIZEN KANE and Hitchcock's VERTIGO – have managed to take first place over the years (Welles's film five times), the men on the block have had to make way for a woman. The winner is Chantal Akerman and her film about JEANNE DIELMAN from 1975.

Delphine Seyrig plays the neat and quiet widow Jeanne in Akerman's minimalist, groundbreaking film unlike any other. We meet Jeanne in her home where she lives with her teenage son and goes about her daily chores. Dishwashing, laundry, dusting – and receiving sex buyers! Everything goes according to routine, until an unexpected event suddenly shakes her world…
