SEVEN FILMS BY JAN TROELL – DIGITALLY RESTORED!
LOTS OF BONUS MATERIAL PLUS 20-PAGE BOOKLET!
Along with Victor Sjöström, Ingmar Bergman and Bo Widerberg, Jan Troell is considered our greatest filmmaker – both internationally and here at home. During Troell's career spanning over fifty years, his films have been nominated for seven Oscars and awarded sixteen Golden Bears, three Golden Globe statuettes and ten awards in Berlin. A magnificent feat that no other Swedish director comes close to. Studio S is proud to present seven of the master director's most acclaimed and beloved films, several of them for the first time on DVD!
HERE IS YOUR LIFE (1966) Epic blockbuster based on Nobel Prize winner Eyvind Johnson's series of novels that begins in 1914 and follows Olof (Eddie Axberg) from the time he leaves his foster home in Norrland at the age of fourteen. Troell's feature film debut, Guldbagge Award winner for best director.
OLE DOLE DOFF (1968) Middle school teacher Sören (Per Oscarsson) in a power struggle where he is doomed to lose because he does not believe in authoritarian principles in teaching. Winner of the Golden Bear and four other awards in Berlin.
BANG! (1977) Jan Troell's partly autobiographical film about a timid chemistry teacher who skips work to compose the great symphony of his life. Guldbagge Award winner for Håkan Serner's leading role and nominated for the Palme d'Or in Cannes.
ENGINEER ANDRÉE'S AERONAUTICS (1982) In 1897, Andrée (Max von Sydow) fights against superhuman forces of nature to reach the North Pole first in his hydrogen balloon. Sweden's most expensive film to date when it was made in 1982. Oscar-nominated for best foreign film.
FAIRYLAND (1988) A naked depiction of society unlike any other, where the Swedes' view of society, nature and individual freedom is put under the microscope. Awarded in Berlin and named Film of the Year by the Swedish Film Critics Association.
IL CAPITANO (1991) A controversial dramatization of the murders in Åmsele in the summer of 1998, when the Finn Juha Valjakkala murdered three members of an ordinary Swedish family. Troell's own favorite in his repertoire. Winner of the Guldbagge for best film and the Silver Bear in Berlin for best director.
A FROZEN DREAM (1997) Troell's documentary "sequel" to Engineer Andrée's flight based on the diaries and stills that were sensationally found frozen in the ice more than 30 years after the expedition. Voices by Max von Sydow, Samuel Fröler, Rolf Lassgård and Anita Ekström. The films have been digitized with improved sound and image quality by the Swedish Film Institute.
