35th Anniversary 4K restoration from the original negative supervised by director Adrian Lyne.
ONE MAN’S PRIVATE PURGATORY
Vietnam veteran Jacob (Tim Robbins) is a tormented soul. Memories of his dead son and traumatic wartime experiences consume more and more of his waking hours. At night, the nightmares come. His growing sense that someone is targeting him and the other members of his former battalion becomes ever harder to shake. Is he losing his grip on reality, or are the demons and visions invading his life more real than his job as a postman and the slush on the streets of New York?
Director Adrian Lyne, who followed his breakthrough with Flashdance and is perhaps best known for the infidelity thriller Fatal Attraction, delivers a richly layered, visually accomplished film that has aged gracefully since its release. The vision of the city as a circle of hell presented in Jacob’s Ladder became something of a recurring theme in darker 1990s thrillers such as Se7en and Dark City. Debate over the many possible interpretations of Lyne’s ending continues to this day.
