OSCAR NOMINATED BEST FOREIGN FILM After years of planning, the hydrogen balloon Örnen takes off from Spitsbergen on July 11, 1897. The goal for engineer Andrée and his men is to be the first to reach the North Pole and raise the Swedish flag where no man has ever set foot before. But difficulties loom large early on. The smallness of man becomes striking in the face of the mighty forces of nature and the expedition becomes a journey straight towards death, with Andrée as a commander driven by an insane dream of making the impossible possible. In 1982, Engineer Andrée's Flight was the most expensive film production in Swedish history. No money was spared to build exact copies of the real balloon and balloon house. Mile after mile was written about how the filming was affected by both hurricane winds and skyrocketing costs, but in the end we got an acclaimed blockbuster that many consider among the finest works of Swedish cinema . The film has been digitally restored in 2k from the film's original negative by the Swedish Film Institute.
