During the occupation of Prague, the city is held in an iron grip by SS leader Reinhard Heydrich, better known by the nickname “The Hangman.” As the main figure responsible for the methodical extermination of Jews, he is the most hated man in the country. In June 1942, Heydrich is shot dead by surgeon Dr. Svoboda, and the city is paralyzed by the hunt for the perpetrator, whose life now hangs by a thread in the hands of the resistance movement.
The war thriller HANGMEN ALSO DIE is inspired by true events and is made by the legendary Fritz Lang (screenplay and direction) and Bertolt Brecht (screenplay), who both came to Hollywood after fleeing Germany. Lang had already made film history in his homeland with “M”, Metropolis and The Testament of Doctor Mabuse and Brecht was famous as an acclaimed playwright. The film was a great success and was nominated for two Oscars. During the war years, no one dared to release the film in cinemas in Sweden, but it was widely shown at secret gatherings.
