The history of animated film can be easily divided into two eras – “Before Fritz” and “After Fritz”. With its unbridled elements of group sex, drug orgies, police chases and left-wing terrorism , FRITZ THE CAT is a brilliant satire on the revolt of the 1960s, which of course angered the establishment. Not only did thirty newspapers in the US join forces for an advertising boycott, the film also became the first animated work in the country’s history to receive an X-rating from the censors. But all the fuss of course only fueled interest in the film, which became a must-see for an entire generation and a milestone in film history.

FRITZ THE CAT is based on a comic strip by eccentric underground cartoonist Robert Crumb and was directed by debutant Ralph Bakshi. And what a debut! The film grossed $100 million worldwide – 130 times its budget !
