In the late 19th century, opera enthusiast Fitzcarraldo has a vision of building an opera house deep in the Amazon rainforest. Everyone except his faithful companion, brothel mother Molly, thinks he's crazy. Confident, Fitzcarraldo sets off into the jungle aboard a large steamboat, but encounters obstacles when a mountain stubbornly stands between him and his dream. To achieve his goal, he decides to do the impossible – drag the entire boat over the mountain!
The filming of the real-life FITZCARRALDO is one of the most talked about in history, bordered by major arguments between director Herzog and the notoriously angry actor Kinski. Also mentioned is the extreme realism Herzog demanded. Instead of filming in a studio, the 320-ton boat was dragged over the mountain – for real! The film is a magnificent monument to the indomitable will of a master.
