Sweden’s most famous erotic film!
Country girl Monika discovers an ancient Viking horn. When it is blown, women are inexplicably overcome with desire. This causes quite a stir on the farm where she lives, not least for a prudish missionary couple visiting the household. Everyone ends up with everyone else. Filmed entirely in the idyllic countryside of Skattungbyn in Dalarna.
What few Swedes realise is that the film’s American director, Joseph W. Sarno (1921–2010), is recognised as one of exploitation cinema’s true geniuses. His work has been celebrated with retrospectives at the prestigious Cinémathèque Française in Paris, the British Film Institute and the Torino Film Festival.
Sarno made more than 125 films, around fifteen of them in Sweden, the first shot in 1967. Most were made before pornography entered the mainstream. His black-and-white films of the 1960s, in particular, earned him the nickname “The Ingmar Bergman of 42nd Street”, thanks to his lighting, long takes and sometimes sombre, anxiety-laden themes. Above all, Sarno was interested in exploring female sexuality. He and his wife, muse and all-round collaborator Peggy fell in love with Sweden, kept an apartment in Hägersten and visited every summer.
Experience the film that shocked, entertained and became part of Sweden’s cultural DNA.
