During the nasty Cultural Revolution in China in the 1970s, a prisoner of conscience escapes from a "correctional institution". His goal is to see the film in which his missing daughter appears, which would fill his sad soul with joy. But this very celluloid reel has been stolen by a clumsy teenage girl and now the hunt for her begins, at the same time as the village cinema manager goes increasingly mad and the crowd of cinemagoers is about to create chaos...
