After two years behind bars, the good-hearted "Stickan" is released from prison. Now he is supposed to "reintegrate" into society, but his supervisor and the entire system fail him. Therefore, he becomes easy prey in the hands of the even more cynical and tough-skinned Janne, a fellow prisoner on the run, who lures him back into the path of crime. Things quickly go wrong. After a major bank robbery, they accidentally run over a policeman, which is the start of one of the biggest police chases in the country's history...

A DREAM OF FREEDOM is inspired by the so-called Nyköpingsdrama of 1966 when the police intervened against two criminals, Clark Olofsson and Gunnar Norgren, which resulted in the latter shooting a policeman dead. Jan Halldoff is directing and he wrote the script together with Bengt Forslund, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Emigrants.
