Shields Green was the son of an African king. But instead of becoming the master of his country, he was sentenced to a life under the whip in slavery in America. After his son is flogged when the slave owners discover that he can read, Shields kills some of the tyrants in a blind rage and manages to escape. Hunted by the western's most notorious bounty hunters, he joins a group of white anti-slavery activists and starts a revolt that will change history.

This is the true story of the slave rebel Shields Green, known to the people as EMPEROR. The title role is played by Dayo Okeniyi (Terminator: Genisys) and the other roles are played by James Cromwell (Oscar nominee for Babe), Bruce Dern (Oscar nominee for Nebraska and Homecoming) and Ben Robson (The Boy) .
