WINNER – JURY SPECIAL PRIZE TO LUCILE HADŽIHALILOVIĆ
– SAN SEBASTIÁN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
BASED ON THE CULT NOVEL BY BRIAN CATLING
The little girl Mia gets a brace with teeth made of ice fitted every day by her caregiver Albert. She spends her endless days in their damp-damaged house somewhere in a run-down post-war central Europe. Someone regularly calls to make sure Mia is okay. Life has a grey and predictable rhythm. Until the day Albert is instructed that Mia must be prepared for a long journey.
Doppelgangers and timelines intersect in a fatefully beautiful and ominous film by Lucile Hadžihalilović. The threat of violence is a constant low-intensity rumble in the background. Based on Brian Catling's cult novel of the same title. Hadžihalilović has since made a strong debut with Jean-Pierre's mouth explored the vulnerability of children in a world that far from always has their best interests in mind. This found its strongest and most magically realistic expression in the sibling films Innocence and Evolution which both won great awards at festivals around the world. Among these are a bronze horse for best film and photo for Innocence at the Stockholm Film Festival 2004. The films are released in a nice box set by Njutafilms and can also be seen via streaming.
