The two thirteen-year-olds Léo and Rémi are best friends. We follow them during idyllic summer holidays when the boys are inseparable. That summer turns out to be a final farewell to the innocent games of childhood. When autumn comes, everything changes when Léo and Rémi start high school. Their previously so easy-going friendship is judged and valued by the other students. Under social pressure, the boys begin to drift apart. Close is a film about friendship and exclusion. It accurately depicts how the influence of the group can make the individual abandon their ideals in order to fit in.
Close is Lukas Dhont's second film. His debut work Girl received a Camera D'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, among other awards. The first in a long line of nominations and wins. Close depicts how reactions from an intolerant environment have disastrous consequences for two young boys. In the lead roles, we see rising stars Edan Dambrine (Léo) and Gustav de Waele (Rémi). They are joined by established actors such as Émilie Dequenne and Léa Drucker. Not a single eye was dry during the screenings in Cannes. Close received a 10-minute standing ovation after its premiere and was awarded the Grand Prix du Jury. Since then, Close has continued to touch jury members, audiences and critics around the world. It has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Film category in 2023.
