THE ARTIST, THE MAN AND THE MYTH CARAVAGGIO
WITH THE SUPPORT OF EUROPE CREATIVE MEDIA
Caravaggio was a well-known, popular but also very controversial artist even during his all-too-short life. When he painted his famous paintings, often with motifs from Christian mythology, he used prostitutes and criminals as models. Caravaggio's habit of carrying a sword and a wild life in the streets and taverns also brought him into conflict with the law. Especially since accusations that he had murdered a rival began to circulate. The men of the church already had their eyes on the painter as they were critical of the irreverent way in which religious figures were depicted in his art. They send out their agent L'Ombra (The Shadow) to get to know Caravaggio's business and conduct. During the course of the investigation, the church investigators also become increasingly embroiled in Caravaggio's affairs, at the stake of life and death.
Caravaggio's Shadow is a grand thriller that depicts the always highly interesting Italian Baroque. The acting ensemble consists of Riccardo Scamarcio ( The translators , John Wick: Chapter 2 ), Louis Garrel ( Little Women , An Officer and Spy ) and Isabelle Huppert ( Love , The Pianist , A trip to Paris ). Director Michele Placido is perhaps best known to Swedes as Inspector Corrado Cattani from the long-running hit series The octopus (1984-2001). Caravaggio's Shadow is a dream project that Placido has been striving towards for many years. Costume designer Carlo Poggiolo's sensual creations have also been seen in Cold Mountain and The Young Pope . Caravaggio's Shadow is permeated with love for the artist's world-famous paintings, which are brought to life in scenes from the studio. You also get to see how Caravaggio drew inspiration from the slums and brothels on the shady side of Naples. The film was shot on location in Naples against a backdrop of historical environments and buildings that in many cases have survived since Caravaggio's own time.
