THE FILMS FROM SWEDEN’S MOST NOTORIOUS VIDEO COMPANY
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST SPECIAL EDITION * DIGITALLY RESTORED
During the barbaric heyday of film censorship in the early 1980s, Video Invest was Sweden’s boldest and most notorious video distributor. Their films were far more outrageous than anyone else’s, prompting police raids on video shops across Sweden. The 26 confiscated VHS titles were destroyed, and the company went bankrupt. Now the films are back! In their original uncut versions, digitally restored.
When Cannibal Holocaust opened in Italian cinemas, director Ruggero Deodato received a letter from none other than Sergio Leone, who wrote: “Dear Ruggero, what a film! A masterpiece of cinematic realism. But I think you’re going to turn the whole world against you!”
Five days later, the authorities intervened. Prints were seized across Italy, and Deodato was brought to trial, accused of making a so-called “snuff movie”, a film depicting actual murders. Only when Deodato brought the actors to court to prove they were alive and well were those charges dropped. He nevertheless received a suspended prison sentence for “distributing obscenity and extreme violence”.
Banned in numerous other countries, Cannibal Holocaust is a grimy, groundbreaking blend of mock-documentary and raw exploitation about a small film crew that disappears while making a documentary about cannibals in the Amazon. The recovered footage reveals acts of cruelty beyond the darkest nightmares.
