CALIGULA is not only one of the most expensive films of the 70s/80s (twice as expensive as Star Wars), but also one of the most controversial of all time. "You stumble out of the cinema in shock," wrote Newsweek about the depiction of the emperor's reign of terror between 37-41 AD, which with its decadent and violent scenes caused censorship bans and prosecutions in several countries. Even the film's big stars were furious with the work because its producer, Penthouse founder Bob Guccione, secretly inserted newly filmed and explicit sex scenes that were not in the legendary Gore Vidal's script. The film became a "talkie" like no other and the audience flocked to the cinemas. In Sweden it was seen by a whopping 780,000 visitors.

With the new cinema version, CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT , the film returns in majestic style. Now restored for a multi-million dollar amount and with several never-before-seen scenes added in order to recreate the film in the version it was originally intended! After the re-premiere in Cannes, it was clear that the infamous film has now been transformed into a film worthy of both audience and critical acclaim

The final version, created under the direction of historian Thomas Negovan and editor Aaron Shaps, who had access to 96 hours of raw footage long thought lost, also includes a new soundtrack by Troy Sterling Nies and a new animated opening credits sequence by Dave McKean.
