When BASIC INSTINCT was released in theaters, it became the big talking point of the year. The sex scenes were more daring than in any other thriller and the interrogation scene quickly became one of the most talked about in film history. The film was reviewed by the MPAA in the US a total of seven times before a cut version managed to escape a pornographic label, which still did not stop feminist and gay activists from loudly protesting against the film. In Sweden, a full 600,000 cinemagoers saw the film, which is now 30 years old and is being celebrated with a brand new and razor-sharp version restored in 4k under the supervision of director Paul Verhoeven.
