HUMPHREY BOGART IN HIS OSCAR-WINNING ROLE
“A MASTERPIECE. PERHAPS THE MOST PERFECT ADVENTURE FILM OF ALL TIME” All Movie Guide
**** "A PLEASURE! VERY ENTERTAINING" Expressen
In one of history's undoubtedly best adventure films, we are treated to a sparkling meeting between Hollywood giants Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Hepburn is the elegant missionary Rose who flees the Germans in the Belgian Congo during World War I. Bogart is the uncouth and gin-drinking skipper Charlie who lets Rose come with him on his battered old steamboat, the "African Queen". The meeting between the mismatched pair is charged, almost to the point of explosion, but they are forced to work together to survive the deadly journey via giant crocodiles, leeches, huge waterfalls and the German machine gunners.
For his legendary role, Bogart was awarded an Oscar. Hepburn was nominated, but went without a statuette this time. However, she was able to console herself by winning four other Oscars during her career. To this day, that is a record for an actor! John Huston's direction and Huston & James Agee's screenplay were also honored with nominations.
