October 1917. Britain has lost many of its best pilots during the war. Young Croft arrives at the 76th Division with only fifteen hours of flying time. "Guys like you can usually make it a fortnight," is the brusque welcome. But Croft soon realizes that everyone feels the same fear of flying missions, even the ace pilot Gresham. Some numb themselves with alcohol. Some break down. Some coldly expect to be shot down. And parachutes are forbidden, because they are considered to demoralize pilots...
